Some business clients talking about the impact of this understanding on their work lives
Everybody witnesses the problem every day. Many people experience it every day at a personal level – chronic stress, overwhelm, low energy, a lack of creative ideas, organizational politics and silos, a kind of “getting through the day…” mentality that means almost everybody is performing way below their potential.
People who are feeling stressed can also have chronically elevated levels of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol – meaning that they are constantly on edge.
For managers and leaders, especially, this is bad news.
The good news is that once you understand that ‘stress’ is something we are creating through our thinking, we can also realise that it is not inevitable. It is possible to work in environments that others would describe as ‘highly pressured’, but not feel stressed. To stay clear, calm and focused.
We are in the midst of a busy-mind epidemic.
It’s so common that people see it as normal – an unfortunate but necessary part of doing business in the modern world.
A growing number of businesses are now beginning to understand the real source of the problem – and therefore how it can easily and quickly overcome through an understanding of the way the human experience works.
That it’s possible for people to operate from a state of complete clarity and well-being – and when they do, every single business outcome is impacted.
So, how is this understanding relevant to organisations?
Fundamentally.
You may have come across the formula:
p = P – I
where little ‘p’ stands for ‘performance’,
Big ‘P’ stands for ‘potential’, and
‘I’ stands for ‘Interference’.
Interference can mean feeling stressed or overwhelmed at the amount they seem to have to do. Or people feeling distracted or resentful because of something that happened in a meeting last week. Feeling anxious about an upcoming presentation. Worrying about something in their personal lives.
It could mean not mentioning the great new idea they’ve had because trust is not high between them and their manager.
Interference can simply be poor engagement and motivation.
It can mean ‘organisational politics’.
Withholding, ‘hiding’, not fully engaging with colleagues… and not really listening.
Just not operating at their full ‘mental horse-power’
When people are experiencing this interference, and get caught up in unhelpful thinking, it reduces their energy, their engagement, their clarity, their resilience, their creativity and their innate resourcefulness.
So, organisations already function according to the quality of the thinking of their people. You only have to stop for a moment and think about the challenges you’re facing at work right now.
Until now, organisations have tended to treat all this as though it’s a skill-based problem. But it isn’t. It’s a function of the quality and clarity of peoples’ thinking.
It has nothing to do with intelligence.
More skills training isn’t the answer.
You could send 100 managers on the best leadership programme in the world, and the impact this has would vary along a bell-curve depending on the individual leader’s emotional resilience and understanding of the way life works.
This quality of mind affects every aspect of performance – sales, profitability, customer service, teamwork, problem-solving.
How much people get done in a day.
What gets learned from mistakes.
How well people listen to each other. The quality of relationships in the business.
When people understand some very simple principles about the way the human experience works, this puts them in charge of their own clarity of mind.
What’s the hidden price your business is paying for mental interference or ‘static’ in the minds of your people? How much does that add up to over a week, a month, a year? Five years?
Enlightened businesses and organisations are beginning to see the true potential of their people fully showing up.
This is especially vital for Leaders in the business, because – whether they’re doing it consciously or not – they are ‘modelling the way’ for others.
Somebody once said that a culture is created from a series of ‘shared stories’. Leaders are constantly weaving their stories into the very fabric of the organization.
Their state of mind, their presence, the way they live their espoused values (or don’t) are the biggest predictor of the culture of the whole organization.
